Increasing literacy skills of deaf children in the
Albuquerque Public Schools

Above: August, 2001. Teacher and researcher, Cecilia Flood, presents SignWriting to Deaf children at Hodgin Elementary School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Deaf teacher Ancelmo (center), from Nicaragua, and James Shepard Kegl, left, look on. James Shepard Kegl established two schools for Deaf children in Nicaragua, one in Bluefields, and one in Condega, Nicaragua. SignWriting is used in those schools to achieve literacy.
Deaf adults benefit from SignWriting too!
Above: Deaf Nicaraguan teacher, Ancelmo, demonstrates writing SignWriting by hand.
SignBank is a useful tool for teachers of deaf children, since the computer program
gives teachers a way to search for signs and words quickly, and to print vocabulary lists
